10 on 10 Photography Circle - July

Wow the 10th of the month already!  Well this month I've decided to share a weekend in my world during winter.....it's a bit more wordy than usual but here goes....

The Oxford Dictionary defines the weekend as "Saturday and Sunday especially regarded as a time for leisure"  The person who wrote that definition clearly does not have 5 children doing 2 different sports over both days of the weekend....yeah that's a whole shitload of leisure!!

Here's how our weekends roll in the depths of winter....

SATURDAY....

Wake up just as early as a school morning....which totally sucks!  Make first attempt to wake Miss 10 and Miss 6, shower, make second, third and fourth attempts to wake Miss 10 and Miss 6, feed Miss 10 and Miss 6, everyone gets dressed and despite our best efforts we generally leave the house later than planned!!  Thank goodness that we live close to the courts and I never thought I'd say this but thank goodness that we have to be there by 8.30am as it means we can actually get a pretty good parking spot!!!

After half an hour of warm ups and practice Miss 6's game starts!!  Endure four quarters of ten minutes each in which a dozen kids run around in a pack attempting to get the ball and trying to remember which lines they can and cannot cross!!!!  The score is generally a pretty predictable nil all draw because this is what the hoop looks like when you are 6 years old!!

But there's always one or two teams who have that mummy coach in her Lorna Jane gym gear who has the best player on the team who has clearly spent hours each day throwing a ball at the hoop and can actually get it in at least once during the game...clearly that is not our team....here's our teams best efforts yet..  But it's okay coz we're all here for the fun...yep we're here at 8.30am on a Saturday morning...for fun....totes awesome!!

And sometimes it gets even more fun....like when it's sub zero temperatures...oh or when it's raining....totes awesome....fun, fun, fun!!!

But it's all worthwhile when I see how much fun Miss 6 has out there on that court and when she talks about it endlessly and when I remember how much cheaper it is than dancing!!!

Now the fun and games doesn't end after that 40 minutes...hell no!!  We wait around for about half an hour, debating about why Miss 10 and Miss 6 cannot buy lollies from the canteen every week and then Miss 10 goes off to warm up for her game.  Half an hour of general whinging from Miss 6 passes like a wet weekend and finally Miss 10's game starts...and the countdown til when we can go home begins!!

Miss 10 marks her players to the point where she totally does their head in, all game every game she marks them like this.....

Sometimes the under 12's even manage to score a few goals...though this year the opposition seem to be doing it more than us...but that's cool coz we're here for fun!!

Finally, at about 12pm, after three and a half l-o-n-g hours we can go home!!!  But not before I succumb to those little donuts.....I just can't resist, I mean look at that cute little duck face that totally has nothing to do with donuts!!

Before you know Saturday bites the dust and Sunday rolls around.

SUNDAY

You've seen Groundhog Day yeah?

Wake up just as early as a school morning....which totally sucks!  Make first attempt to wake Miss 17, Miss 16, Miss 14, Miss 10 and Miss 6, shower, make second, third and fourth attempts to wake said children, feed said children, everyone gets dressed and despite our best efforts we generally leave the house later than planned!!

Hubby coaches Miss 16 and Miss 14 in the Under 16 girls so I get to drive Miss 17 to the ends of the earth to a desolate soccer field in the middle of nowhere with Miss 10 and Miss 6 in tow....short straw I know!!

This is quite often what we arrive to....

But Miss 6 has got it sussed....best seats in the house...

Generally the game drags on.....45 minutes a half....feels like an eternity !!

Finally the ref calls time and it's all over red rover.  Then we go home and cook up sausages on the bbq because there is no way that we can justify the cost of buying them at our respective grounds!

Miss 17's team seems to be edging it's way into the top 4.....how totes awesome is that.....another few weeks added to the already dragged out season with semis and finals.....yay!!!!

Thankfully the girls steer well clear of summer sports so I have time to recover before wham bam winter sport registrations comes around again and slap you in the face and you sign up to do it all again!!!!!

I know I may have exceeded my 10 photo limit but hey I didn't want you to miss any of the fun!!

This month I am linking up to Cathy whose wonderful blog you can find here and you can check out her amazing photos for July here .  Make sure you pop around the whole photography circle...so many great photos to see!!

  2. Your weekends are super busy but hey, you're raising the sports stars of the future and besides don't the donuts kind of make up for it?!

  3. Ugh - I hated basketball when I was a kid. I actually cried tears of relief when my grandparents told me I no longer had to play - when I was a freshman in high school. In addition to your awesome photos (my favorites being the shots of the hoops and the misty, foggy soccer field), I love your words - "passes like a wet weekend" - awesome metaphor!

    Great job this month!

  4. Brings back all the memories of early morning sport I did as a child with my 8am netball games. I agree miss 6 has the best seats in the back of the car for soccer!

  5. That's commitment! Good capture of the perils of parenthood. Glad your girls enjoy their sport though. Lovely photos - you can feel the cold! I took my girl to Netball a couple of weeks back in thick fog! It was FREEZING! This is my first year of early morning netball. I was just beginning to enjoy that my son's football is a bit later in the morning now that he's older. But then, as you know, there's the younger children coming up through the ranks so more cold mornings ahead... :) xx

    1. Haha false sense of security Diana....as one gets older and games become later there's always a younger one coming through with earlier games!!

  7. This post made my literally laugh out loud, hehe! You've done such a good job of telling the story. I love that shot of the goal going in, well done! I can't believe your Miss 6 is playing games already! My Miss 6 does netball but it is just training, they do skills development, they don't play any games until they're 8! I can't say I'm sad about that either, haha x

  9. I nearly spat my coffee at the screen. Such a crack. And I totally relate, except I've only had to do it with 1...and not 5! We're up to 12 o'çlock games now, which is much more civilised! Love the shot of the ball going through the ring. Great capture {and story} x

  10. Your weekends sound fun Veronica - says me who is yet to start kid sports. You'll no doubt look back with fond memories of all the rushing around you did. The netball uniform for Miss 6 is adorable. I love her all snug in the car watching her big sisters play. Awesome photos Veronica xx

I can totally relate to all your shots! I love them. I love/hate my kids sports too. My life is filled with netball and soccer every weekend too and I freeze my butt off. But I love watching them play. Miss 6 in the back of the car is the best! Good memories for her. xx
